The advantages of different backup systems bundled

Backup via disc backup on a RAID system is common. However, there are quite a few drawbacks: the system is expensive and also an energy guzzler. You need many HDs to achieve a good degree of reliability and redundancy. And then on top of that comes the cooling for all these hard drives. Especially economically, this method of backup is not ideal.

USB Hard Drive

A separate hard drive via USB then? Also widely used. And it is fast, rewritable and expandable. But it does require the necessary self-discipline and thus administration. In other words, with this system, backups are often forgotten. It also works with a single hard drive, making it rather insecure. For private photos maybe just good enough, but certainly not for important company data.

Optical systems

Then we have optical systems, as CD, DVD and blue-ray. Again, self-discipline is required and the medium, unless it is a rewriteable disc, is not rewritable. But even such a rewriteable disc has a limit to overwriting. The advantage of separate hard drives and optical drives is that they are very easy to store externally.

Tapes

Brings us to tapes, perhaps so far the most suitable medium for corporate backup. Point is that it is rather cumbersome and requires a lot of administration. Tapes require special drivers in the software and mechanical parts that are prone to failure. Moreover, it is not a random access medium and by no means gives instant recovery. It is fairly reliable, cheap, expandable and physically separable from corporate network and servers, though.
