British government demands access to encrypted iCloud data

The British government has asked Apple to create a backdoor in iCloud to allow authorities worldwide to access encrypted user data. This request falls under the Investigatory Powers Act 2016, also known as the Snoopers’ Charter.

In response, Apple is considering no longer offering the Advanced Data Protection service, which provides end-to-end encryption, in the UK. Still, the problem remains because the British government wants access to the data of all iCloud users, including those in the Benelux countries.

This development underscores how important it is for organizations to think critically about where they store their data for compliance and data protection purposes. This applies not only to iCloud, but also to other cloud providers such as Google, Microsoft and AWS, which may face similar challenges.

It is therefore wise for organizations to adopt a thoughtful data strategy, where sensitive or critical data is better kept locally or in encrypted storage outside such regulations.
